Line output calculator

It goes from the nominal machine speed to the containers that actually come out per hour and per shift, discounting line efficiency. Useful to check a quotation, plan shifts or verify that a nominal rate covers demand.

Line output

Theoretical and actual output from speed, efficiency and shift hours.

Theoretical—env/h
Actual (×eff.)—env/h
Per shift—env

Actual = speed × 60 × efficiency

Pre-selection and estimation tool. Check the result against the real data of your product and manufacturer.

Formulas

  • Theoretical output (containers/h) = speed (containers/min) × 60
  • Real output (containers/h) = theoretical × efficiency (%) ÷ 100
  • Output per shift = real × hours per shift

Worked example

A 40 containers-per-minute filler has a theoretical output of 2,400 containers/h. At 85 % efficiency, 2,040 real containers/h come out, that is 16,320 containers in an 8-hour shift. If demand is 18,000 per shift, the machine alone is not enough: efficiency or speed must go up.

Limits and how to use it

  • Efficiency bundles stops, micro-stops, changeovers and rejects; if you know the three factors separately, use the OEE calculator.
  • The speed must be that of the line bottleneck, not of the fastest machine.
  • Hours per shift are scheduled production hours, net of breaks and start-ups if they are not already in the efficiency.
