Conveyor belt calculator

It relates the drive drum speed to the linear belt speed and, if you enter the pitch between containers, to the containers per minute that section can carry. It is the basic check when choosing a gearmotor and when synchronising a conveyor with the machine it feeds.

Conveyor belt

Linear speed from the drum diameter and rpm. Pitch optional.

Speed—m/min
Speed—m/s
Rate—env/min

v = π × Ø × rpm

Pre-selection and estimation tool. Check the result against the real data of your product and manufacturer.

Formulas

  • Speed (m/min) = π × drum Ø (mm) × rpm ÷ 1000
  • Speed (m/s) = speed (m/min) ÷ 60
  • Throughput (containers/min) = speed (m/min) × 1000 ÷ pitch (mm)

Worked example

A 120 mm drum at 60 rpm gives 22.62 m/min (0.377 m/s). With containers spaced every 90 mm, that section carries 251 containers per minute: enough margin to feed a 200 containers/min filler without excessive accumulation.

Limits and how to use it

  • The rpm are those of the drum, not of the motor: divide by the gearbox ratio.
  • For thick belts use the drum diameter plus belt thickness; slip is not included.
  • Throughput assumes a constant pitch; on accumulation conveyors the real pitch changes with line pressure.
